European Visa Changes

Keep up to date with changes to entry requirements to the European Union for Australian Travellers

As of March 13, 2025, Australian citizens will need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) travel authorization to enter the Schengen area for tourism, business, or transit, even though they currently do not require a visa

Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization system, similar to the US's ESTA, designed to enhance security and facilitate travel to the Schengen area.

  • Who needs ETIAS?

Non-EU citizens, including Australians, who currently don't require a visa for short-stay visits to the Schengen area will need to obtain an ETIAS before traveling.

  • When will ETIAS be implemented?

The ETIAS system is expected to be fully operational in the last quarter of 2026.

  • How to apply for ETIAS?

The ETIAS application is an online process, requiring personal information, passport details, and travel plans.

  • What is the Schengen Area?

The Schengen Area comprises 29 European countries that have abolished passport and border controls at their mutual borders.

  • What about the UK?

The UK is not part of the Schengen area, and as of January 8, 2025, citizens from non-European countries, including Australia, require an ETA to travel to Britain and Northern Ireland.
